I was thinking about the Marxist analysis and wondering if this excerpt still holds true today. I think that the lower classes have more influence and more of a voice today. With access to media and media devices, many people are able to become involved in our culture and contribute to it's "intellectual force". I think that corporations do contribute to our culture as a starting point. They guide us and show us what is popular and why we need to consume products that are popular. I am wondering if our culture would advance without corporations advertising practices. Would we be able to change culture without corporate suggestions? Lauren
After reading Mix it Up Chapter 3 I have gained a new perspective on modern mass media. Growing up in a generation that relies on media outlets to live daily life it is hard to uncover the true intent of the media. The reading highlights how advertising and entertainment industries goal is to gain economic and cultural dominance and this is achieved through manipulative tactics. Under monopoly capitalism all media is becoming a systematic business and people are unknowingly loosing their ability to sculpt their own ideas and behavior. This idea is reaffirmed through the music industry that shows how the consumer has a lack of freedom. This is a scary thought that definite has some truth in it. Ryan Massey
